GCSE Maths Specification
GCSE Mathematics is designed to help learners build secure number skills, algebraic fluency, geometrical understanding, statistical confidence, and clear mathematical reasoning.
The specification supports learners across Foundation and Higher tiers, giving students a structured route from essential techniques to more demanding problem solving.
Specification purpose
The course is built around the mathematical knowledge students need for everyday life, future study, and employment. It encourages learners to understand methods, choose suitable strategies, and communicate their reasoning clearly.
Students are expected to work with mathematics in a range of contexts, including pure mathematical problems and practical situations where they need to interpret information and make decisions.

Specification overview
OCR GCSE Mathematics (J560) is available at Foundation tier and Higher tier. Students are entered for one tier only, and they sit all three papers within that tier in the same examination series.
Each paper is a written exam worth 100 marks and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Together, the three papers make up the full GCSE, with each paper contributing one third of the final qualification.

Specification aims
