Formulae Sheet Top Tips

When a formulae sheet is provided in GCSE Mathematics exams, it can be a useful support, but it only helps if learners know how to use it quickly and accurately.

These tips are designed to help students prepare with the formulae sheet before the exam and use it sensibly during the paper.

Tip 1 Practise with the correct sheet

Before the exam, learners should practise mock exams and question papers with the formulae sheet beside them. This helps them remember what is included, where each formula is placed, and which formulae still need more practice.

Foundation and Higher tier formulae sheets can be different, so students should revise with the version that matches the tier they will sit.

Preparation check

  • Use the formulae sheet during timed practice, not only during revision notes.
  • Highlight formulae that are hard to recognise or apply.
  • Ask for help if the correct tier sheet is unclear.

Tip 2 Match formulae to question types

Knowing a formula is only part of the skill. Learners also need to recognise when a question is asking for that formula and how to substitute values correctly.

For example, students should practise deciding when to use Pythagoras' theorem, when to use trigonometry, and how to label sides and angles before starting a calculation.

Question practice

  • Practise with different diagrams, including shapes drawn in unusual orientations.
  • Label right-angled triangles carefully before choosing a method.
  • Compare similar questions to see why one uses Pythagoras and another uses trigonometry.

Tip 3 Know what is not included

The formulae sheet does not remove the need to learn mathematics. Some formulae and methods still need to be memorised, and some formulae may be given inside specific questions instead.

Learners should use the sheet as a support, not as a replacement for understanding. A formula on the sheet may also help trigger memory of a related formula that is not printed there.

Remember separately

  • Memorise formulae that are not printed on the sheet, such as the area of a parallelogram, speed, and density.
  • Use known formulae to help recall related ones, for example prism formulae can support work on cylinders.
  • Be ready to use formulae that are provided in the question itself, such as cone, sphere, pyramid, pressure, or kinematics formulae.

Tip 4 Keep it visible in the exam

During the exam, the formulae sheet should be kept somewhere visible and easy to reach. If it is hidden under the question paper, students may forget to use it when it could help.

A quick glance at the sheet can be useful when checking a method, choosing a formula, or confirming a detail before substituting values.

Tip 5 Use the sheet actively

A fresh formulae sheet is provided for each exam, so students can use it in a way that helps them think. They might sketch a quick supporting diagram, rewrite a variable letter, or mark the formula they are using.

The examiner marks the working and answers written in the answer spaces, not notes on the formulae sheet. Learners should make sure every step they want marked is written clearly in the question paper.

Exam habits

  • Use the sheet as a working aid, but write final working in the answer space.
  • Cross out and replace variable letters if that helps connect the formula to the question.
  • Check that units, substitutions, and calculator entries match the formula being used.
