GCSE Chemistry Specification

GCSE Chemistry helps learners understand matter, chemical change, materials, energy changes, analysis, rates, equilibria, organic chemistry, and the chemical challenges linked to the environment and industry.

The course builds scientific knowledge alongside practical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. Learners are expected to apply ideas in familiar laboratory contexts and in wider real-world chemistry.

Chemistry A Gateway Science

The Chemistry A route organises the subject into connected teaching topics. Practical activity is built into the course so that learners develop a secure understanding of how chemical evidence is collected, tested, and interpreted.

Learners are entered for either Foundation tier or Higher tier. They sit two written papers at the chosen tier, and both papers together make up the full GCSE Chemistry qualification.

The course develops

  • knowledge of particles, bonding, reactions, analysis, rates, equilibria, organic chemistry, and Earth chemistry
  • confidence with chemical symbols, formulae, equations, units, calculations, and graphs
  • practical skills linked to observation, measurement, risk, apparatus, and evaluation
  • the ability to connect chemical ideas across different topics and unfamiliar contexts
  • clear written explanations using accurate scientific vocabulary

Specification overview

The subject content is split into six teaching topics, C1-C6, plus a practical activity skills topic, C7. The topic structure supports both Foundation and Higher tier learners.

At each tier, Paper 1 focuses mainly on Topics C1-C3 and practical skills. Paper 2 focuses mainly on Topics C4-C6 and practical skills, and may assume knowledge from Topics C1-C3.

Chemistry key ideas

Chemistry explains the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter. Learners study atoms, particles, bonding, structures, chemical change, energy, and the ways chemistry is used to solve practical problems.

The specification expects learners to understand that matter is made from atoms, that elements show patterns in their properties, and that chemical behaviour can often be explained by electron structure and bonding.

Learners should understand that

  • atoms are the tiny particles from which elements and compounds are built
  • the periodic table helps explain patterns in chemical and physical properties
  • atoms bond through electron transfer or electron sharing
  • the arrangement and shape of particles affects the properties of substances
  • chemical reactions involve energy changes and may occur at different rates
  • important reaction types include proton transfer, electron transfer, and electron sharing
  • chemical processes can be used to make useful products while raising questions about resources, waste, and sustainability
